# Description
Just a bunch of miscellaneous fixes to the Rust documentation that I
found recently while doing
a pass on some things.
# User-Facing Changes

# Description
This PR introduces [workspaces
dependencies](https://doc.rust-lang.org/cargo/reference/workspaces.html#the-dependencies-table).
The advantages are:
- a single place where dependency versions are declared
- reduces the number of files to change when upgrading a dependency
- reduces the risk of accidentally depending on 2 different versions of
the same dependency
I've only done a few so far. If this PR is accepted, I might continue
and progressively do the rest.

# Description
This PR renames the conversion functions on `Value` to be more consistent.
It follows the Rust [API guidelines](https://rust-lang.github.io/api-guidelines/naming.html#ad-hoc-conversions-follow-as_-to_-into_-conventions-c-conv) for ad-hoc conversions.
The conversion functions on `Value` now come in a few forms:
- `coerce_{type}` takes a `&Value` and attempts to convert the value to
`type` (e.g., `i64` are converted to `f64`). This is the old behavior of
some of the `as_{type}` functions -- these functions have simply been
renamed to better reflect what they do.
- The new `as_{type}` functions take a `&Value` and returns an `Ok`
result only if the value is of `type` (no conversion is attempted). The
returned value will be borrowed if `type` is non-`Copy`, otherwise an
owned value is returned.
- `into_{type}` exists for non-`Copy` types, but otherwise does not
attempt conversion just like `as_type`. It takes an owned `Value` and
always returns an owned result.
- `coerce_into_{type}` has the same relationship with `coerce_{type}` as
`into_{type}` does with `as_{type}`.
- `to_{kind}_string`: conversion to different string formats (debug,
abbreviated, etc.). Only two of the old string conversion functions were
removed, the rest have been renamed only.
- `to_{type}`: other conversion functions. Currently, only `to_path`
exists. (And `to_string` through `Display`.)
This table summaries the above:
| Form | Cost | Input Ownership | Output Ownership | Converts `Value`
case/`type` |
| ---------------------------- | ----- | --------------- |
---------------- | -------- |
| `as_{type}` | Cheap | Borrowed | Borrowed/Owned | No |
| `into_{type}` | Cheap | Owned | Owned | No |
| `coerce_{type}` | Cheap | Borrowed | Borrowed/Owned | Yes |
| `coerce_into_{type}` | Cheap | Owned | Owned | Yes |
| `to_{kind}_string` | Expensive | Borrowed | Owned | Yes |
| `to_{type}` | Expensive | Borrowed | Owned | Yes |

# Description
This PR fixes a minor bug that prevented this command from running.
```nushell
table --list | each {|r| print ($r); print (ls | first 3 | table --theme $r)}
```
Here's the output now of the first few themes.
![image](https://github.com/nushell/nushell/assets/343840/21bc8942-5106-4b6a-8905-e90d6cb9a153)
It prevented it from running because "default" wasn't a real table
theme. Now "default" is a synonym of rounded.
Also tweaked the error message when a bad theme name is provided.

# Description
Where appropriate, this PR replaces instances of
`Value::get_data_by_key` and `Value::follow_cell_path` with
`Record::get`. This avoids some unnecessary clones and simplifies the
code in some places.
# Description
Our config exists both as a `Config` struct for internal consumption and
as a `Value`. The latter is exposed through `$env.config` and can be
both set and read.
Thus we have a complex bug-prone mechanism, that reads a `Value` and
then tries to plug anything where the value is unrepresentable in
`Config` with the correct state from `Config`.
The parsing involves therefore mutation of the `Value` in a nested
`Record` structure. Previously this was wholy done manually, with
indices.
To enable deletion for example, things had to be iterated over from the
back. Also things were indexed in a bunch of places. This was hard to
read and an invitation for bugs.
With #10876 we can now use `Record::retain_mut` to traverse the records,
modify anything that needs fixing, and drop invalid fields.
# Parts:
- Error messages now consistently use the correct spans pointing to the
problematic value and the paths displayed in some messages are also
aligned with the keys used for lookup.
- Reconstruction of values has been fixed for:
- `table.padding`
- `buffer_editor`
- `hooks.command_not_found`
- `datetime_format` (partial solution)
- Fix validation of `table.padding` input so value is not set (and
underflows `usize` causing `table` to run forever with negative values)
- New proper types for settings. Fully validated enums instead of
strings:
- `config.edit_mode` -> `EditMode`
- Don't fall back to vi-mode on invalid string
- `config.table.mode` -> `TableMode`
- there is still a fall back to `rounded` if given an invalid
`TableMode` as argument to the `nu` binary
- `config.completions.algorithm` -> `CompletionAlgorithm`
- `config.error_style` -> `ErrorStyle`
- don't implicitly fall back to `fancy` when given an invalid value.
- This should also shrink the size of `Config` as instead of 4x24 bytes
those fields now need only 4x1 bytes in `Config`
- Completely removed macros relying on the scope of `Value::into_config`
so we can break it up into smaller parts in the future.
- Factored everything into smaller files with the types and helpers for
particular topics.
- `NuCursorShape` now explicitly expresses the `Inherit` setting.
conversion to option only happens at the interface to `reedline`
# Description
- Simplify `table` record highlight with `.get_mut`
- pretty straight forward
- Use record iterators in `table` abbreviation logic
- This required some rework if we go from guaranted contiguous arrays to
iterators
- Refactor `nu-table` internals to new record API

PS: Maybe it's better being a flag to `table` rather then a

PS: I am not sure why the logic was removed in a first place
# Description
As part of the refactor to split spans off of Value, this moves to using
helper functions to create values, and using `.span()` instead of
matching span out of Value directly.
Hoping to get a few more helping hands to finish this, as there are a
lot of commands to update :)

# Description
This doesn't really do much that the user could see, but it helps get us
ready to do the steps of the refactor to split the span off of Value, so
that values can be spanless. This allows us to have top-level values
that can hold both a Value and a Span, without requiring that all values
have them.
We expect to see significant memory reduction by removing so many
unnecessary spans from values. For example, a table of 100,000 rows and
5 columns would have a savings of ~8megs in just spans that are almost
always duplicated.

# Description
This PR creates a new `Record` type to reduce duplicate code and
possibly bugs as well. (This is an edited version of #9648.)
- `Record` implements `FromIterator` and `IntoIterator` and so can be
iterated over or collected into. For example, this helps with
conversions to and from (hash)maps. (Also, no more
`cols.iter().zip(vals)`!)
- `Record` has a `push(col, val)` function to help insure that the
number of columns is equal to the number of values. I caught a few
potential bugs thanks to this (e.g. in the `ls` command).
- Finally, this PR also adds a `record!` macro that helps simplify
record creation. It is used like so:
```rust
record! {
"key1" => some_value,
"key2" => Value::string("text", span),
"key3" => Value::int(optional_int.unwrap_or(0), span),
"key4" => Value::bool(config.setting, span),
}
```
Since macros hinder formatting, etc., the right hand side values should
be relatively short and sweet like the examples above.
Where possible, prefer `record!` or `.collect()` on an iterator instead
of multiple `Record::push`s, since the first two automatically set the
record capacity and do less work overall.

fix#9796
Sorry that you've had the issues.
I've actually encountered them yesterday too (seems like they have
appeared after some refactoring in the middle) but was not able to fix
that rapid.
Created a bunch of tests.
cc: @fdncred
Note:
This option will be certainly slower then a default ones. (could be
fixed but ... maybe later).
Maybe it shall be cited somewhere.
PS: Haven't tested on a wrapped/expanded tables.

Reverts nushell/nushell#9796
This is just draft since we're seeing some issues with the latest fixes
to table drawing that just landed with #9796. We're hoping to get these
fixed, but if we're not able to fix them before the next release, we'll
need to revert (hence this PR, just in case we need it).
A patch to play with.
Need to make a few tests after all.
The question is what shall be done with `table.mode = none`, as it has
no borders.
```nu
$env.config.table.move_header = true
This PR reverts https://github.com/nushell/nushell/pull/9391
We try not to revert PRs like this, though after discussion with the
Nushell team, we decided to revert this one.
The main reason is that Nushell, as a codebase, isn't ready for these
kinds of optimisations. It's in the part of the development cycle where
our main focus should be on improving the algorithms inside of Nushell
itself. Once we have matured our algorithms, then we can look for
opportunities to switch out technologies we're using for alternate
forms.
Much of Nushell still has lots of opportunities for tuning the codebase,
paying down technical debt, and making the codebase generally cleaner
and more robust. This should be the focus. Performance improvements
should flow out of that work.
Said another, optimisation that isn't part of tuning the codebase is
premature at this stage. We need to focus on doing the hard work of
making the engine, parser, etc better.
close? #8060
Quite a bit of refactoring took place.
I believe a few improvements to collapse/expand were made.
I've tried to track any performance regressions and seems like it is
fine.
I've noticed something different now with default configuration path or
something in this regard?
So I might missed something while testing because of this.
Requires some oversight.
So it's actually a work around to do "our best".
We basically try 3 attemps to build a table with each time truncating
values bigger then (termwidth/2, termwidth/4, termwidth/8).
PS1: The logic is kind of not ideal need to think about it.
_______________
PS2:
I've just noticed that multi-line key behaves strangely; (not sure
whether it's caused by this wrap (unlikely))
Need to investigate this.
I'd bet it's a multiline key.
I have changed `assert!(a == b)` calls to `assert_eq!(a, b)`, which give
better error messages. Similarly for `assert!(a != b)` and
`assert_ne!(a, b)`. Basically all instances were comparing primitives
(string slices or integers), so there is no loss of generality from
special-case macros,
I have also fixed a number of typos in comments, variable names, and a
few user-facing messages.
