Shrink the size of Expr (#12610)
# Description
Continuing from #12568, this PR further reduces the size of `Expr` from
64 to 40 bytes. It also reduces `Expression` from 128 to 96 bytes and
`Type` from 32 to 24 bytes.

This was accomplished by:
- for `Expr` with multiple fields (e.g., `Expr::Thing(A, B, C)`),
merging the fields into new AST struct types and then boxing this struct
(e.g. `Expr::Thing(Box<ABC>)`).
- replacing `Vec<T>` with `Box<[T]>` in multiple places. `Expr`s and
`Expression`s should rarely be mutated, if at all, so this optimization
makes sense.

By reducing the size of these types, I didn't notice a large performance
improvement (at least compared to #12568). But this PR does reduce the
memory usage of nushell. My config is somewhat light so I only noticed a
difference of 1.4MiB (38.9MiB vs 37.5MiB).

Copy-on-write for record values (#12305)
# Description
This adds a `SharedCow` type as a transparent copy-on-write pointer that
clones to unique on mutate.

As an initial test, the `Record` within `Value::Record` is shared.

There are some pretty big wins for performance. I'll post benchmark
results in a comment. The biggest winner is nested access, as that would
have cloned the records for each cell path follow before and it doesn't
have to anymore.

The reusability of the `SharedCow` type is nice and I think it could be
used to clean up the previous work I did with `Arc` in `EngineState`.
It's meant to be a mostly transparent clone-on-write that just clones on
`.to_mut()` or `.into_owned()` if there are actually multiple
references, but avoids cloning if the reference is unique.

Range refactor (#12405)
# Description
Currently, `Range` is a struct with a `from`, `to`, and `incr` field,
which are all type `Value`. This PR changes `Range` to be an enum over
`IntRange` and `FloatRange` for better type safety / stronger compile
time guarantees.

Add command_prelude module (#12291)
# Description
When implementing a `Command`, one must also import all the types
present in the function signatures for `Command`. This makes it so that
we often import the same set of types in each command implementation
file. E.g., something like this:
```rust
use nu_protocol::ast::Call;
use nu_protocol::engine::{Command, EngineState, Stack};
use nu_protocol::{
    record, Category, Example, IntoInterruptiblePipelineData, IntoPipelineData, PipelineData,
    ShellError, Signature, Span, Type, Value,

```

This PR adds the `nu_engine::command_prelude` module which contains the
necessary and commonly used types to implement a `Command`:
```rust
// command_prelude.rs
pub use crate::CallExt;
pub use nu_protocol::{
    ast::{Call, CellPath},
    engine::{Command, EngineState, Stack},
    record, Category, Example, IntoInterruptiblePipelineData, IntoPipelineData, IntoSpanned,

This should reduce the boilerplate needed to implement a command and
also gives us a place to track the breadth of the `Command` API. I tried
to be conservative with what went into the prelude modules, since it
might be hard/annoying to remove items from the prelude in the future.
Let me know if something should be included or excluded.

allow math avg to work with durations (#11598)

I ran into a problem where one of our benchmark tests in nu_scripts
wouldn't work because math avg wouldn't work with durations, so I made
these changes to support it. I'm confident that there are other math
commands that probably need this "fix".

Side note - we should really fix our inout_output_type system.

Allow tables and records as input to math commands (#11496)
# Description
The math functions `avg`, `max`, `median`, `min`, `product`, `stddev`,
`sum` and `variance` all takes a list as input and return a number.
<https://github.com/nushell/nushell/blob/main/crates/nu-command/src/math/utils.rs>
contains code that makes these functions work for tables (by running the
function on each column), but this functionality has not been accessible
because the input types are too strict. This PR remedies this.

The functions should also work on records, since a record is basically a
one-row table.

Most of these functions also make sense for durations and file sizes,
except `product` of course. There's an implementation issue with
`stddev` and `variance` for durations and file sizes, but they could in
principle support it.

This PR only adds supported types, and doesn't remove any, so there
should be no breaking changes.

Fix incorrect handling of boolean flags for builtin commands (#11492)
# Description
Possible fix of #11456
This PR fixes a bug where builtin commands did not respect the logic of
dynamically passed boolean flags. The reason is
[has_flag](6f59abaf43/crates/nu-protocol/src/ast/call.rs (L204C5-L212C6))
method did not evaluate and take into consideration expression used with
flag.

To address this issue a solution is proposed:
1. `has_flag` method is moved to `CallExt` and new logic to evaluate
expression and check if it is a boolean value is added
2. `has_flag_const` method is added to `CallExt` which is a constant
version of `has_flag`
3. `has_named` method is added to `Call` which is basically the old
logic of `has_flag`
4. All usages of `has_flag` in code are updated, mostly to pass
`engine_state` and `stack` to new `has_flag`. In `run_const` commands it
is replaced with `has_flag_const`. And in a few select places: parser,
`to nuon` and `into string` old logic via `has_named` is used.

Explicit values of boolean flags are now respected in builtin commands.

Enforce required, optional, and rest positional arguments start with an uppercase and end with a period. (#11285)
# Description

This updates all the positional arguments (except with
`--features=dataframe` or `--features=extra`) to start with an uppercase
letter and end with a period.

Part of #5066, specifically [this
comment](/nushell/nushell/issues/5066#issuecomment-1421528910)

Some arguments had example data removed from them because it also
appears in the examples.

There are other inconsistencies in positional arguments I noticed while
making the tests pass which I will bring up in #5066.

  - Guarantee that existing allocation can be reused
- Use proper record iterators in `path join`
- Remove unnecesary hashmap in `path join`
  - Should minimally reduce the overhead
- Unzip records in `nu-command`
- Refactor `query web` plugin to use record APIs
- Use `Record::into_values` for `values` command
- Use `Record::columns()` in `join` instead.
  - Potential minor pessimisation
  - Not the hot value path
- Use sane `Record` iters in example `Debug` impl
- Avoid layout assumption in `nu-cmd-extra/roll/mod`

Convert more examples and tests to record! macro (#10840)
# Description
Use `record!` macro instead of defining two separate `vec!` for `cols`
and `vals` when appropriate.
This visually aligns the key with the value.
Further more you don't have to deal with the construction of `Record {
cols, vals }` so we can hide the implementation details in the future.

## State

Not covering all possible commands yet, also some tests/examples are
better expressed by creating cols and vals separately.

# Bycatch

Where I noticed it I replaced usage of `Value` constructors with
`Span::test_data()` or `Span::unknown()` to the `Value::test_...`
constructors. This should make things more readable and also simplify
changes to the `Span` system in the future.

Use int type name consistently (#10579)
# Description
When referring to the type use `int` consistently. Only when referring
to the concept of integer numbers use `integer`.

- Fix `random integer` to `random int` tests
  - Forgot in #10520
- Use int instead of integer in error messages
- Use int type name in bits commands
- Fix messages in `for` examples
- Use int typename in `into` commands
- Use int typename in rest of commands
- Report errors in `nu-protocol` with int typename

Move Value to helpers, separate span call (#10121)

As part of the refactor to split spans off of Value, this moves to using
helper functions to create values, and using `.span()` instead of
matching span out of Value directly.

Hoping to get a few more helping hands to finish this, as there are a

Spanned Value step 1: span all value cases (#10042)
# Description

This doesn't really do much that the user could see, but it helps get us
ready to do the steps of the refactor to split the span off of Value, so
that values can be spanless. This allows us to have top-level values
that can hold both a Value and a Span, without requiring that all values
have them.

We expect to see significant memory reduction by removing so many
unnecessary spans from values. For example, a table of 100,000 rows and
5 columns would have a savings of ~8megs in just spans that are almost
always duplicated.

Create Record type (#10103)
# Description
This PR creates a new `Record` type to reduce duplicate code and
possibly bugs as well. (This is an edited version of #9648.)
- `Record` implements `FromIterator` and `IntoIterator` and so can be
iterated over or collected into. For example, this helps with
conversions to and from (hash)maps. (Also, no more
`cols.iter().zip(vals)`!)
- `Record` has a `push(col, val)` function to help insure that the
number of columns is equal to the number of values. I caught a few
potential bugs thanks to this (e.g. in the `ls` command).
- Finally, this PR also adds a `record!` macro that helps simplify
record creation. It is used like so:
   ```rust
   record! {
       "key1" => some_value,
       "key2" => Value::string("text", span),
       "key3" => Value::int(optional_int.unwrap_or(0), span),
       "key4" => Value::bool(config.setting, span),
   }
   ```
Since macros hinder formatting, etc., the right hand side values should
be relatively short and sweet like the examples above.

Where possible, prefer `record!` or `.collect()` on an iterator instead
of multiple `Record::push`s, since the first two automatically set the
record capacity and do less work overall.

Besides the changes in `nu-protocol` the only other breaking changes are
to `nu-table::{ExpandedTable::build_map, JustTable::kv_table}`.

Replace &Span with Span since Span is Copy (#9770)
# Description
`Span` is `Copy`, so we probably should not be passing references of
`Span` around. This PR replaces all instances of `&Span` with `Span`,
copying spans where necessary.

This alters some public functions to take `Span` instead of `&Span` as
input. Namely, `EngineState::get_span_contents`,
`nu_protocol::extract_value`, a bunch of the math commands, and
`Gstat::gstat`.

Fix signature for math mode (#9846)
This command will always return a list, either because there are
multiple entries with the same frequency or just one.

It's implementation doesn't care about the composition of types as long
as they are number like, can be heterogeneous, will report
independently.

Remove Signature.vectorizes_over_list entirely (#9777)
# Description
With the current typechecking logic this property has no effect.
It was only used in the example testing, and provided some indication of
this vectorizing property.
With #9742 all commands that previously declared it have explicit list
signatures. If we want to get it back in the future we can reconstruct
it from the signature.

Simplifies the example testing a bit.

Causes a breaking change for plugins that previously declared it. While
this causes a compile fail, this was already broken by our more
stringent type checking.
This will be a good reminder for plugin authors to update their
signature as well to reflect the more stringent type checking.

Use explicit in/out list types for vectorized commands (#9742)

All commands that declared `.vectorizes_over_list(true)` now also
explicitly declare the list form of their scalar types.

- Add comments about cellpath behavior that is still unresolved

revert: move to ahash (#9464)
This PR reverts https://github.com/nushell/nushell/pull/9391

We try not to revert PRs like this, though after discussion with the
Nushell team, we decided to revert this one.

The main reason is that Nushell, as a codebase, isn't ready for these
kinds of optimisations. It's in the part of the development cycle where
our main focus should be on improving the algorithms inside of Nushell
itself. Once we have matured our algorithms, then we can look for
opportunities to switch out technologies we're using for alternate
forms.

Much of Nushell still has lots of opportunities for tuning the codebase,
paying down technical debt, and making the codebase generally cleaner
and more robust. This should be the focus. Performance improvements
should flow out of that work.

Said another, optimisation that isn't part of tuning the codebase is
premature at this stage. We need to focus on doing the hard work of
making the engine, parser, etc better.

Fix clippy warnings (upcoming) (#9282)

Fix negative precision round with ints (issue #9049) (#9073)
# Description
Before this PR, `math round` ignores the input if it's an `int`. This
results in the following behaviour:
```
> 123 | math round --precision -1
123
```
When the correct result is 120.

Now `int values` are converted to `float values` before actually
rounding up the number in order to take advantage of the float
implementation.

Fixes #9049.

I copied the `math ln` command and replaced the relevant parts to
implement `math exp`.

The `math exp` command was added. Now one can do `[1, 2, 3] | math exp`
to get e to the power of these numbers.

I only wrote example tests, same as for `math ln`, which also does not
have special tests. I have ran into an issue with the tests but it seems

Box ShellError in Value::Error (#8375)
# Description

Our `ShellError` at the moment has a `std::mem::size_of<ShellError>` of
136 bytes (on AMD64). As a result `Value` directly storing the struct
also required 136 bytes (thanks to alignment requirements).

This change stores the `Value::Error` `ShellError` on the heap.

Pro:
- Value now needs just 80 bytes
- Should be 1 cacheline less (still at least 2 cachelines)

Con:
- More small heap allocations when dealing with `Value::Error`
  - More heap fragmentation
  - Potential for additional required memcopies

# Further code changes

Includes a small refactor of `try` due to a type mismatch in its large
match.

None for regular users.

Plugin authors may have to update their matches on `Value` if they use
`nu-protocol`

Needs benchmarking to see if there is a benefit in real world workloads.
**Update** small improvements in runtime for workloads with high volume
of values. Significant reduction in maximum resident set size, when many

Document and critically review ShellError variants - Ep. 1 (#8229)

The `ShellError` enum at the moment is kind of messy. 

Many variants are basic tuple structs where you always have to reference
the implementation with its macro invocation to know which field serves
which purpose.
Furthermore we have both variants that are kind of redundant or either
overly broad to be useful for the user to match on or overly specific
with few uses.

So I set out to start fixing the lacking documentation and naming to
make it feasible to critically review the individual usages and fix
those.
Furthermore we can decide to join or split up variants that don't seem
to be fit for purpose.

Feel free to add review comments if you spot inconsistent use of
`ShellError` variants.

Fix typos and use more idiomatic assertions (#7755)
I have changed `assert!(a == b)` calls to `assert_eq!(a, b)`, which give
better error messages. Similarly for `assert!(a != b)` and
`assert_ne!(a, b)`. Basically all instances were comparing primitives
(string slices or integers), so there is no loss of generality from
special-case macros,

I have also fixed a number of typos in comments, variable names, and a
few user-facing messages.

Remove math eval command (#7284)
Reasoning: 

Most missing math commands are implemented with #7258.
The `meval` crate itself declares that it doesn't strive to stringent
standards (https://docs.rs/meval/latest/meval/#related-projects).
For example no particular special casing or transformations are
performed to ensure numerical stability. It uses the same rust `std`
library functions we use or have access to (and `f64`).
While the command call syntax in nushell may be a bit more verbose,
having a single source of truth and common commands is beneficial.
Furthermore the `math` commands can themselves implement broadcasting
over lists (or table columns).

Closes #7073

Removed dependencies:
- `meval`
- `nom 1.2.4` (duplicate)

User-Facing Changes:

Scripts using `math eval` will break. 
We remove a further `eval` like behavior to get results through runtime evaluation (albeit limited in scope)

Tests:

- Updated tests that internally used `math eval`.
- Removed one test that primarily used `math eval` to obtain a result from `str join`

Standardise the use of ShellError::UnsupportedInput and ShellError::TypeMismatch and add spans to every instance of the former (#7217)
# Description

* I was dismayed to discover recently that UnsupportedInput and
TypeMismatch are used *extremely* inconsistently across the codebase.
UnsupportedInput is sometimes used for input type-checks (as per the
name!!), but *also* used for argument type-checks. TypeMismatch is also
used for both.
I thus devised the following standard: input type-checking *only* uses
UnsupportedInput, and argument type-checking *only* uses TypeMismatch.
Moreover, to differentiate them, UnsupportedInput now has *two* error
arrows (spans), one pointing at the command and the other at the input
origin, while TypeMismatch only has the one (because the command should
always be nearby)
* In order to apply that standard, a very large number of
UnsupportedInput uses were changed so that the input's span could be
retrieved and delivered to it.
* Additionally, I noticed many places where **errors are not propagated
correctly**: there are lots of `match` sites which take a Value::Error,
then throw it away and replace it with a new Value::Error with
less/misleading information (such as reporting the error as an
"incorrect type"). I believe that the earliest errors are the most
important, and should always be propagated where possible.
* Also, to standardise one broad subset of UnsupportedInput error
messages, who all used slightly different wordings of "expected
`<type>`, got `<type>`", I created OnlySupportsThisInputType as a
variant of it.
* Finally, a bunch of error sites that had "repeated spans" - i.e. where
an error expected two spans, but `call.head` was given for both - were
fixed to use different spans.
