# Description
Our config exists both as a `Config` struct for internal consumption and
as a `Value`. The latter is exposed through `$env.config` and can be
both set and read.
Thus we have a complex bug-prone mechanism, that reads a `Value` and
then tries to plug anything where the value is unrepresentable in
`Config` with the correct state from `Config`.
The parsing involves therefore mutation of the `Value` in a nested
`Record` structure. Previously this was wholy done manually, with
indices.
To enable deletion for example, things had to be iterated over from the
back. Also things were indexed in a bunch of places. This was hard to
read and an invitation for bugs.
With #10876 we can now use `Record::retain_mut` to traverse the records,
modify anything that needs fixing, and drop invalid fields.
# Parts:
- Error messages now consistently use the correct spans pointing to the
problematic value and the paths displayed in some messages are also
aligned with the keys used for lookup.
- Reconstruction of values has been fixed for:
- `table.padding`
- `buffer_editor`
- `hooks.command_not_found`
- `datetime_format` (partial solution)
- Fix validation of `table.padding` input so value is not set (and
underflows `usize` causing `table` to run forever with negative values)
- New proper types for settings. Fully validated enums instead of
strings:
- `config.edit_mode` -> `EditMode`
- Don't fall back to vi-mode on invalid string
- `config.table.mode` -> `TableMode`
- there is still a fall back to `rounded` if given an invalid
`TableMode` as argument to the `nu` binary
- `config.completions.algorithm` -> `CompletionAlgorithm`
- `config.error_style` -> `ErrorStyle`
- don't implicitly fall back to `fancy` when given an invalid value.
- This should also shrink the size of `Config` as instead of 4x24 bytes
those fields now need only 4x1 bytes in `Config`
- Completely removed macros relying on the scope of `Value::into_config`
so we can break it up into smaller parts in the future.
- Factored everything into smaller files with the types and helpers for
particular topics.
- `NuCursorShape` now explicitly expresses the `Inherit` setting.
conversion to option only happens at the interface to `reedline`
- Replaced `start`/`end` with span.
- Fixed standard library.
- Add `help` option.
- Add a couple more errors for invalid record types.
Resolve#10914
# Description
# User-Facing Changes
- **BREAKING CHANGE:** `error make` now takes in `span` instead of
`start`/`end`:
```Nushell
error make {
msg: "Message"
label: {
text: "Label text"
span: (metadata $var).span
}
}
```
- `error make` now has a `help` argument for custom error help.
# Description
As part of the refactor to split spans off of Value, this moves to using
helper functions to create values, and using `.span()` instead of
matching span out of Value directly.
Hoping to get a few more helping hands to finish this, as there are a
lot of commands to update :)

# Description
This PR adds a new config item, `error_style`. It will render errors in
a screen reader friendly mode when set to `"simple"`. This is done using
`miette`'s own `NarratableReportHandler`, which seamlessly replaces the
default one when needed.
Before:
```
After:
snippet line 1: doesnt exist
label at line 1, columns 1 to 6: executable was not found
```
## Things to be determined
- ~Review naming. `errors.style` is not _that_ consistent with the rest
of the code. Menus use a `style` record, but table rendering mode is set
via `mode`.~ As it's a single config, we're using `error_style` for now.
- Should this kind of setting be toggable with one single parameter?
`accessibility.no_decorations` or similar, which would adjust the style
of both errors and tables accordingly.
# User-Facing Changes
No changes by default, errors will be rendered differently if
`error_style` is set to `simple`.

There's a PR updating the docs over here
https://github.com/nushell/nushell.github.io/pull/1026
# Description
This doesn't really do much that the user could see, but it helps get us
ready to do the steps of the refactor to split the span off of Value, so
that values can be spanless. This allows us to have top-level values
that can hold both a Value and a Span, without requiring that all values
have them.
We expect to see significant memory reduction by removing so many
unnecessary spans from values. For example, a table of 100,000 rows and
5 columns would have a savings of ~8megs in just spans that are almost
always duplicated.

This PR should close#8036, #9028 (in the negative) and #9118.
Fix for #9118 is a bit pedantic. As reported, the issue is:
```
> 2023-05-07T04:08:45+12:00 - 2019-05-10T09:59:12+12:00
3yr 12month 2day 18hr 9min 33sec
with this PR, you now get:
```

208wk 1day 18hr 9min 33sec
```
Which is strictly correct, but could still fairly be called "weird date
arithmetic".
# Description
* [x] Abide by constraint that Value::Duration remains a number of
nanoseconds with no additional fields.
* [x] `to_string()` only displays weeks .. nanoseconds. Duration doesn't
have base date to compute months or years from.
* [x] `duration | into record` likewise only has fields for weeks ..
nanoseconds.
* [x] `string | into duration` now accepts compound form of duration
to_string() (e.g '2day 3hr`, not just '2day')
* [x] `duration | into string` now works (and produces the same
representation as to_string(), which may be compound).
# User-Facing Changes
## duration -> string -> duration
Now you can "round trip" an arbitrary duration value: convert it to a
string that may include multiple time units (a "compound" value), then
convert that string back into a duration. This required changes to
`string | into duration` and the addition of `duration | into string'.
```
> 2day + 3hr
2day 3hr # the "to_string()" representation (in this case, a compound value)
> 2day + 3hr | into string
2day 3hr # string value
> 2day + 3hr | into string | into duration
2day 3hr # round-trip duration -> string -> duration
```
Note that `to nuon` and `from nuon` already round-tripped durations, but
use a different string representation.
## potentially breaking changes
* string rendering of a duration no longer has 'yr' or 'month' phrases.
* record from `duration | into record` no longer has 'year' or 'month'
fields.
The excess duration is all lumped into the `week` field, which is the
largest time unit you can
convert to without knowing the datetime from which the duration was
calculated.
Scripts that depended on month or year time units on output will need to
be changed.
### Examples
```
> 365day
52wk 1day
## Used to be:
## 1yr
> 365day | into record
╭──────┬────╮
│ week │ 52 │
│ day │ 1 │
│ sign │ + │
╰──────┴────╯
## used to be:
##╭──────┬───╮
##│ year │ 1 │
##│ sign │ + │
##╰──────┴───╯
> (365day + 4wk + 5day + 6hr + 7min + 8sec + 9ms + 10us + 11ns)
56wk 6day 6hr 7min 8sec 9ms 10µs 11ns
## used to be:
## 1yr 1month 3day 6hr 7min 8sec 9ms 10µs 11ns
## which looks reasonable, but was actually only correct in 75% of the years and 25% of the months in the last 4 years.
> (365day + 4wk + 5day + 6hr + 7min + 8sec + 9ms + 10us + 11ns) | into record
╭─────────────┬────╮
│ week │ 56 │
│ day │ 6 │
│ hour │ 6 │
│ minute │ 7 │
│ second │ 8 │
│ millisecond │ 9 │
│ microsecond │ 10 │
│ nanosecond │ 11 │
│ sign │ + │
╰─────────────┴────╯
```
Strictly speaking, these changes could break an existing user script.
Losing years and months as time units is arguably a regression in
behavior.
Also, the corrected duration calculation could break an existing script
that was calibrated using the old algorithm.
# Description
The working directory doesn't have to be set for those tests (or would
be the default anyways). When appropriate also remove calls to the
`pipeline()` function. In most places kept the diff minimal and only
removed the superfluous part to not pollute the blame view. With simpler
tests also simplified things to make them more readable overall (this
included removal of the raw string literal).
Work for #8670
# Description
For years, Nushell has used `let-env` to set a single environment
variable. As our work on scoping continued, we refined what it meant for
a variable to be in scope using `let` but never updated how `let-env`
would work. Instead, `let-env` confusingly created mutations to the
command's copy of `$env`.
So, to help fix the mental model and point people to the right way of
thinking about what changing the environment means, this PR removes
`let-env` to encourage people to think of it as updating the command's
environment variable via mutation.
Before:
```
let-env FOO = "BAR"
```
Now:
```
$env.FOO = "BAR"
```
It's also a good reminder that the environment owned by the command is
in the `$env` variable rather than global like it is in other shells.
# User-Facing Changes
BREAKING CHANGE BREAKING CHANGE
This completely removes `let-env FOO = "BAR"` so that we can focus on
`$env.FOO = "BAR"`.
# Description
This change fixes the bug associated with an incorrect span in
`type_mismatch` error message as described in #7288
The `span` argument in the method `into_value` was not being used to
convert a `PipelineData::Value` type so when called in
[eval_expression](https://github.com/nushell/nushell/blob/main/crates/nu-engine/src/eval.rs#L514-L515),
the original expression's span was not being used to overwrite the
result of `eval_subexpression`.
Using the example described in the issue, the whole bracketed
subexpression is correctly underlined.
# Description
Inspired by #7592
For brevity use `Value::test_{string,int,float,bool}`
Includes fixes to commands that were abusing `Span::test_data` in their
implementation. Now the call span is used where possible or the explicit
`Span::unknonw` is used.
## Command fixes
- Fix abuse of `Span::test_data()` in `query_xml`
- Fix abuse of `Span::test_data()` in `term size`
- Fix abuse of `Span::test_data()` in `seq date`
- Fix two abuses of `Span::test_data` in `nu-cli`
- Change `Span::test_data` to `Span::unknown` in `keybindings listen`
- Add proper call span to `registry query`
- Fix span use in `nu_plugin_query`
- Fix span assignment in `select`
- Use `Span::unknown` instead of `test_data` in more places
## Other
- Use `Value::test_int`/`test_float()` consistently
- More `test_string` and `test_bool`
- Fix unused imports
# User-Facing Changes
Some commands may now provide more helpful spans for downstream use in
errors
# Description
Currently, `filesize_format`/`filesize_metric` conflicts are resolved as
follows: if the `filesize_format` ends in "ib", then that overrides
`filesize_metric`, otherwise, `filesize_metric` overrides
`filesize_format`. This removes this difficult-to-predict asymmetric
behaviour, and makes it so that `filesize_metric` always overrides
`filesize_format`.
This also adds tests for `$env.config.filesize.format` and
`$env.config.filesize.metric` values.
REMINDER: `filesize_metric` means "increments of 1000", and refers to
KB-MB-GB-TB etc.
# Description
Closes#7059. Rather than generate a new Record each time $env.config is
accessed (as described in that issue), instead `$env.config = ` now A)
parses the input record, then B) un-parses it into a clean Record with
only the valid values, and stores that as an env-var. The reasoning for
this is that I believe `config_to_nu_record()` (the method that performs
step B) will be useful in later PRs. (See below)
As a result, this also "fixes" the following "bug":
```
〉$env.config = 'butts'
$env.config is not a record
〉$env.config
butts
```
~~Instead, `$env.config = 'butts'` now turns `$env.config` into the
default (not the default config.nu, but `Config::default()`, which
notably has empty keybindings, color_config, menus and hooks vecs).~~
This doesn't attempt to fix#7110. cc @Kangaxx-0
# Description
While perusing Value.rs, I noticed the `Value::int()`, `Value::float()`,
`Value::boolean()` and `Value::string()` constructors, which seem
designed to make it easier to construct various Values, but which aren't
used often at all in the codebase. So, using a few find-replaces
regexes, I increased their usage. This reduces overall LOC because
structures like this:
```
Value::Int {
val: a,
span: head
}
```
are changed into
```
Value::int(a, head)
```
and are respected as such by the project's formatter.
There are little readability concerns because the second argument to all
of these is `span`, and it's almost always extremely obvious which is
the span at every callsite.
