<title>Nested and Overlapping Zones</title>

nested or overlapping zones. Such overlapping/nested zones are allowed

and Shorewall processes zones in the order that they appear in the

<filename>/etc/shorewall/zones</filename> file. So if you have nested

zones, you want the sub-zone to appear before the super-zone and in the

case of overlapping zones, the rules that will apply to hosts that

belong to both zones is determined by which zone appears first in
|

<filename>/etc/shorewall/zones</filename>.</para>

<title>/etc/shorewall/rules</title>
|
|

<para>The <filename>/etc/shorewall/rules</filename> file defines
|

exceptions to the policies established in the
|
|
<filename>/etc/shorewall/policy</filename> file. There is one entry in
|

/etc/shorewall/rules for each of these rules. Entries in this file only
|
|
govern the establishment of new connections — packets that are part of an
|
|
existing connection or that establish a connection that is related to an
|
|
existing connection are automatically accepted.</para>

<para>Rules for each pair of zones (source zone, destination zone) are

evaluated in the order that they appear in the file — the first match

determines the disposition of the connection request with a couple of
