do not attempt to glob expand if the file path is wrapped in quotes (#11569)
# Description
Fixes: #11455

### For arguments which is annotated with `:path/:directory/:glob`
To fix the issue, we need to have a way to know if a path is originally
quoted during runtime. So the information needed to be added at several
levels:
* parse time (from user input to expression)
We need to add quoted information into `Expr::Filepath`,
`Expr::Directory`, `Expr::GlobPattern`
* eval time
When convert from `Expr::Filepath`, `Expr::Directory`,
`Expr::GlobPattern` to `Value::String` during runtime, we won't auto
expanded the path if it's quoted

### For `ls`
It's really special, because it accepts a `String` as a pattern, and it
generates `glob` expression inside the command itself.

So the idea behind the change is introducing a special SyntaxShape to
ls: `SyntaxShape::LsGlobPattern`. So we can track if the pattern is
originally quoted easier, and we don't auto expand the path either.

Then when constructing a glob pattern inside ls, we check if input
pattern is quoted, if so: we escape the input pattern, so we can run `ls
a[123]b`, because it's already escaped.
Finally, to accomplish the checking process, we also need to introduce a
new value type called `Value::QuotedString` to differ from
`Value::String`, it's used to generate an enum called `NuPath`, which is
finally used in `ls` function. `ls` learned from `NuPath` to know if
user input is quoted.

Add CLI flag to disable history (#11550)
# Description
Adds a CLI flag for nushell that disables reading and writing to the
history file. This will be useful for future testing and possibly our
users as well. To borrow `fish` shell's terminology, this allows users
to start nushell in "private" mode.

Allow plugins to receive configuration from the nushell configuration (#10955)
# Description

When nushell calls a plugin it now sends a configuration `Value` from
the nushell config under `$env.config.plugins.PLUGIN_SHORT_NAME`. This
allows plugin authors to read configuration provided by plugin users.

The `PLUGIN_SHORT_NAME` must match the registered filename after
`nu_plugin_`. If you register `target/debug/nu_plugin_config` the
`PLUGIN_NAME` will be `config` and the nushell config will loook like:

        $env.config = {
          # ...
          plugins: {
            config: [
              some
              values
            ]
          }
        }

Configuration may also use a closure which allows passing values from
`$env` to a plugin:

        $env.config = {
          # ...
          plugins: {
            config: {||
              $env.some_value
            }
          }
        }

This is a breaking change for the plugin API as the `Plugin::run()`
function now accepts a new configuration argument which is an
`&Option<Value>`. If no configuration was supplied the value is `None`.

Plugins compiled after this change should work with older nushell, and
will behave as if the configuration was not set.

adjust some commansd input_output type (#11436)
# Description
1. Make table to be a subtype of `list<any>`, so some input_output_types
of filter commands are unnecessary
2. Change some commands which accept an input type, but generates
different output types. In this case, delete duplicate entry, and change
relative output type to `<any>`

Yeah it makes some commands more permissive, but I think it's better to
run into strange issue that why my script runs to failed during parse
time.

add type check during eval time (#11475)
# Description
Fixes: #11438 

Take the following as example:
```nushell
def spam [foo: string] {
    $'foo: ($foo | describe)'
}
def outer [--foo: string] {
    spam $foo
}

outer
```
When we call `outer`, type checker only check the all for `outer`, but
doesn't check inside the body of `outer`. This pr is trying to introduce
a type checking process through `Type::is_subtype()` during eval time.

## NOTE
I'm not really sure if it's easy to make a check inside the body of
`outer`. Adding an eval time type checker seems like an easier solution.
As a result: `outer` will be caught by runtime, not parse time type
checker

Fix incorrect handling of boolean flags for builtin commands (#11492)
# Description
Possible fix of #11456
This PR fixes a bug where builtin commands did not respect the logic of
dynamically passed boolean flags. The reason is
[has_flag](6f59abaf43/crates/nu-protocol/src/ast/call.rs (L204C5-L212C6))
method did not evaluate and take into consideration expression used with
flag.

To address this issue a solution is proposed:
1. `has_flag` method is moved to `CallExt` and new logic to evaluate
expression and check if it is a boolean value is added
2. `has_flag_const` method is added to `CallExt` which is a constant
version of `has_flag`
3. `has_named` method is added to `Call` which is basically the old
logic of `has_flag`
4. All usages of `has_flag` in code are updated, mostly to pass
`engine_state` and `stack` to new `has_flag`. In `run_const` commands it
is replaced with `has_flag_const`. And in a few select places: parser,
`to nuon` and `into string` old logic via `has_named` is used.

which asks for a spread operator in lists, in records, and when calling
commands.

This PR will allow spreading arguments to commands (both internal and
external). It will also deprecate spreading arguments automatically when
passing to external commands.

- Users will be able to use `...` to spread arguments to custom/builtin
commands that have rest parameters or allow unknown arguments, or to any
external command
- If a custom command doesn't have a rest parameter and it doesn't allow
unknown arguments either, the spread operator will not be allowed
- Passing lists to external commands without `...` will work for now but
will cause a deprecation warning saying that it'll stop working in 0.91
(is 2 versions enough time?)

Here's a function to help with demonstrating some behavior:
```nushell
> def foo [ a, b, c?, d?, ...rest ] { [$a $b $c $d $rest] | to nuon }
```

You can pass a list of arguments to fill in the `rest` parameter using
`...`:
```nushell
> foo 1 2 3 4 ...[5 6]
[1, 2, 3, 4, [5, 6]]
```

If you don't use `...`, the list `[5 6]` will be treated as a single
argument:

```nushell
> foo 1 2 3 4 [5 6] # Note the double [[]]
[1, 2, 3, 4, [[5, 6]]]
```

You can omit optional parameters before the spread arguments:
```nushell
> foo 1 2 3 ...[4 5] # d is omitted here
[1, 2, 3, null, [4, 5]]
```

If you have multiple lists, you can spread them all:
```nushell
> foo 1 2 3 ...[4 5] 6 7 ...[8] ...[]
[1, 2, 3, null, [4, 5, 6, 7, 8]]
```

Here's the kind of error you get when you try to spread arguments to a
command with no rest parameter:

# Examples

Suppose you have multiple tables:
```nushell
let people = [[id name age]; [0 alice 100] [1 bob 200] [2 eve 300]]
let evil_twins = [[id name age]; [0 ecila 100] [-1 bob 200] [-2 eve 300]]
```

Maybe you often find yourself needing to merge multiple tables and want
a utility to do that. You could write a function like this:
```nushell
def merge_all [ ...tables ] { $tables | reduce { |it, acc| $acc | merge $it } }
```

Then you can use it like this:
```nushell
> merge_all ...([$people $evil_twins] | each { |$it| $it | select name age })
╭───┬───────┬─────╮
│ # │ name  │ age │
├───┼───────┼─────┤
│ 0 │ ecila │ 100 │
│ 1 │ bob   │ 200 │
│ 2 │ eve   │ 300 │
╰───┴───────┴─────╯
```

Except they had duplicate columns, so now you first want to suffix every
column with a number to tell you which table the column came from. You
can make a command for that:
```nushell
def select_and_merge [ --cols: list<string>, ...tables ] {
  let renamed_tables = $tables
    | enumerate
    | each { |it|
      $it.item | select $cols | rename ...($cols | each { |col| $col + ($it.index | into string) })
    };
  merge_all ...$renamed_tables
}
```
And call it like this:
```nushell
> select_and_merge --cols [name age] $people $evil_twins

Suppose someone's made a command to search for APT packages:

```nushell

    repositories?: list<string> # Which repositories to look in (searches in all if not given)

}
```

It has a lot of parameters to configure it, so you might make your own
helper commands to wrap around it for specific cases. Here's one
example:
```nushell
# Only look for packages locally
def search-pkgs-local [
    --install              # Whether to install any packages it finds
    log_level: int
    exclude?: list<string> # Packages to exclude
    ...pkgs                # Package names to search for
] {
  # All required and optional positional parameters are given
  search-pkgs --install=$install $log_level [] ["<local URI or something>"] ...$pkgs
}
```
And you can run it like this:
```nushell
> search-pkgs-local --install=false 5 ...["python2.7" "vim"]

One thing I realized when writing this was that if we decide to not
allow passing optional arguments using the spread operator, then you can
(mis?)use the spread operator to skip optional parameters. Here, I
didn't want to give `exclude` explicitly, so I used a spread operator to
pass the packages to install. Without it, I would've needed to do
`search-pkgs-local --install=false 5 [] "python2.7" "vim"` (explicitly
pass `[]` (or `null`, in the general case) to `exclude`). There are
probably more idiomatic ways to do this, but I just thought it was
something interesting.

If you're a virologist of the [xkcd](https://xkcd.com/350/) kind,
another helper command you might make is this:
```nushell
# Install any packages it finds
def live-dangerously [ ...pkgs ] {
  # One optional argument was given (exclude), while another was not (repositories)
  search-pkgs 0 [] ...$pkgs --install # Flags can go after spread arguments
}
```

Running it:
```nushell
> live-dangerously "git" "*vi*" # *vi* because I don't feel like typing out vim and neovim
╭──────────────┬─────────────╮
│ install      │ true        │
│ log_level    │ 0           │
│ exclude      │ []          │
│ repositories │ null        │
│ pkgs         │ [git, *vi*] │

```

Here's an example that uses the spread operator more than once within
the same command call:
```nushell
let extras = [ chrome firefox python java git ]

def search-pkgs-curated [ ...pkgs ] {
  (search-pkgs
      1
      [emacs]
      ["example.com", "foo.com"]
      vim # A must for everyone!
      ...($pkgs | filter { |p| not ($p | str contains "*") }) # Remove packages with globs
      python # Good tool to have
      ...$extras
      --install=false
      python3) # I forget, did I already put Python in extras?
}
```

Running it:

Remove unnecessary replace_in_variable (#11424)
# Description
`Expression::replace_in_variable` is only called in one place, and it is
called with `new_var_id` = `IN_VARIABLE_ID`. So, it ends up doing
nothing. E.g., adding `debug_assert_eq!(new_var_id, IN_VARIABLE_ID)` in
`replace_in_variable` does not trigger any panic.

Lock out new direct construction of Record (#11414)

With #11386 we don't have any nushell-internal code directly accessing
the `vals` field of `Record`, so let's make it private so everyone in
the future uses the checked ways guaranteeing matching cols/vals.

The `cols` feel has to remain pub for now as `rename` still directly
mutates this field. See #11020 for challenges for this refactor.

Deprecate --flag: bool in custom command (#11365)
# Description
While #11057 is merged, it's hard to tell the difference between
`--flag: bool` and `--flag`, and it makes user hard to read custom
commands' signature, and hard to use them correctly.

After discussion, I think we can deprecate `--flag: bool` usage, and
encourage using `--flag` instead.

Fix replacement closures for update, insert, and upsert (#11258)
# Description
This PR addresses #11204 which points out that using a closure for the
replacement value with `update`, `insert`, or `upsert` does not work for
lists.

# User-Facing Changes
- Replacement closures should now work for lists in `upsert`, `insert`,
and `update`. E.g., `[0] | update 0 {|i| $i + 1 }` now gives `[1]`
instead of an unhelpful error.
- `[1 2] | insert 4 20` no longer works. Before, this would give `[1, 2,
null, null, 20]`, but now it gives an error. This was done to match the
intended behavior in `Value::insert_data_at_cell_path`, whereas the
behavior before was probably unintentional. Following
`Value::insert_data_at_cell_path`, inserting at the end of a list is
also fine, so the valid indices for `upsert` and `insert` are
`0..=length` just like `Vec::insert` or list inserts in other languages.

Spread operator in record literals (#11144)
Goes towards implementing #10598, which asks for a spread operator in
lists, in records, and when calling commands (continuation of #11006,
which only implements it in lists)

# Description
This PR is for adding a spread operator that can be used when building
records. Additional functionality can be added later.

Changes:

- Previously, the `Expr::Record` variant held `(Expression, Expression)`
pairs. It now holds instances of an enum `RecordItem` (the name isn't
amazing) that allows either a key-value mapping or a spread operator.
- `...` will be treated as the spread operator when it appears before
`$`, `{`, or `(` inside records (no whitespace allowed in between) (not
implemented yet)
- The error message for duplicate columns now includes the column name
itself, because if two spread records are involved in such an error, you
can't tell which field was duplicated from the spans alone

`...` will still be treated as a normal string outside records, and even
in records, it is not treated as a spread operator when not followed
immediately by a `$`, `{`, or `(`.

Users will be able to use `...` when building records.

# Description

This PR enables a new feature that shows which externals are found in
your path via the syntax highlighter as you type.

This idea could use some improvement where it caches the items in your
path and on some trigger, expires that cache and creates a new on. Right
now, all it does is call the `which` crate on every character you type.
This could be problematic if you have hundreds of paths in your PATH or
if some of your paths in your Path point to extraordinarily slow file
systems. WSL pointing to Windows comes to mind. Either way, I've thrown
it up here for people to try and provide feedback. I think the novelty
of showing what is valid and what isn't is pretty cool. I believe
fish-shell also does this, IIRC.

Redirect: support redirect stderr with piping stdout to next commands. (#10851)

Fixes: #10271

Given the following script:
```shell
# test.sh
echo aaaaa
echo bbbbb 1>&2
echo cc
```

This pr makes the following command possible:
```nushell
bash test.sh err> /dev/null | lines | each {|line| $line | str length}
```


## General idea behind the change:
When nushell redirect stderr message to external file
1. it take stdout of external stream, and pass this stream to next
command, so it won't block next pipeline command from running.
2. relative stderr stream are handled by `save` command

These two streams are handled separately, so we need to delegate a
thread to `save` command, or else we'll have a chance to hang nushell,
we have meet a similar before: #5625.

### One case to consider
What if we're failed to save to an external stream? (Like we don't have
a permission to save to a file)?
In this case nushell will just print a waning message, and don't stop
the following scripts from running.

Remove ShellError::FlagNotFound (#11119)

`ShellError::FlagNotFound` had a note that said it may be removable so

I can't see this error being used since it was introduced with #4364. I

Refactor Value cell path functions to fix bugs (#11066)

Slightly refactors the cell path functions (`insert_data_at_cell_path`,
etc.) for `Value` to fix a few bugs and ensure consistent behavior.
Namely, case (in)sensitivity now applies to lazy records just like it
does for regular `Records`. Also, the insert behavior of `insert` and
`upsert` now match, alongside fixing a few related bugs described below.
Otherwise, a few places were changed to use the `Record` API.

# Tests
Added tests for two bugs:
- `{a: {}} | insert a.b.c 0`: before this PR, doesn't create the
innermost record `c`.
- `{table: [[col]; [{a: 1}], [{a: 1}]]} | insert table.col.b 2`: before
this PR, doesn't add the field `b: 2` to each row.

Add Argument::span() and Call::arguments_span() (#10983)
# Description

These make it easy to make a Span that covers an entire argument and the
span of all arguments in a Call.

Call::arguments_span() is useful for errors where a command may accept
arguments or the pipeline, but not both.

Argument::span() is useful for errors where an arguments is incompatible
with one or more other arguments.

In particular, I wish to use this to create an error for an
implementation of #9563 that either allows arguments to set limits:

```nushell
limits set RLIMIT_NOFILE --soft 255 --hard 1024
```

Or pipeline:

```nushell
{name: RLIMIT_NOFILE, soft: 255} | limits set
```

But not both:

add "default" table theme (#11072)

This PR fixes a minor bug that prevented this command from running.
```nushell
table --list | each {|r| print ($r); print (ls | first 3 | table --theme $r)}
```
Here's the output now of the first few themes.

It prevented it from running because "default" wasn't a real table
theme. Now "default" is a synonym of rounded.

Also tweaked the error message when a bad theme name is provided.

Implement Display for CellPath (#11023)
# Description
Because `CellPath::into_string` takes a borrowed `self`, I renamed it to
`to_string` to follow Rust [API
guidelines](https://rust-lang.github.io/api-guidelines/naming.html#ad-hoc-conversions-follow-as_-to_-into_-conventions-c-conv).
This then triggered the clippy lint
[inherent_to_string](https://rust-lang.github.io/rust-clippy/master/index.html#/inherent_to_string),
which is... correct! The current `CellPath::into_string` is being used
as if it were the `Display` implementation for `CellPath`.

Improve case insensitivity consistency (#10884)
# Description

Add an extension trait `IgnoreCaseExt` to nu_utils which adds some case
insensitivity helpers, and use them throughout nu to improve the
handling of case insensitivity. Proper case folding is done via unicase,
which is already a dependency via mime_guess from nu-command.

In actuality a lot of code still does `to_lowercase`, because unicase
only provides immediate comparison and doesn't expose a `to_folded_case`
yet. And since we do a lot of `contains`/`starts_with`/`ends_with`, it's
not sufficient to just have `eq_ignore_case`. But if we get access in
the future, this makes us ready to use it with a change in one place.

Plus, it's clearer what the purpose is at the call site to call
`to_folded_case` instead of `to_lowercase` if it's exclusively for the
purpose of case insensitive comparison, even if it just does
`to_lowercase` still.

- Some commands that were supposed to be case insensitive remained only
insensitive to ASCII case (a-z), and now are case insensitive w.r.t.
non-ASCII characters as well.

Matches the general behavior of `Vec::drain` or

- Drop the remaining elements (implementing the unstable `keep_rest()`
would not be compatible with something like `indexmap`)
- No `AsRef<[T]>` or `Drain::as_slice()` behavior as this would make

Refactor and fix Config<->Value mechanism (#10896)
# Description
Our config exists both as a `Config` struct for internal consumption and
as a `Value`. The latter is exposed through `$env.config` and can be
both set and read.
Thus we have a complex bug-prone mechanism, that reads a `Value` and
then tries to plug anything where the value is unrepresentable in
`Config` with the correct state from `Config`.

The parsing involves therefore mutation of the `Value` in a nested
`Record` structure. Previously this was wholy done manually, with
indices.
To enable deletion for example, things had to be iterated over from the
back. Also things were indexed in a bunch of places. This was hard to
read and an invitation for bugs.

With #10876 we can now use `Record::retain_mut` to traverse the records,
modify anything that needs fixing, and drop invalid fields.

# Parts:

- Error messages now consistently use the correct spans pointing to the
problematic value and the paths displayed in some messages are also
aligned with the keys used for lookup.
- Reconstruction of values has been fixed for:
	- `table.padding`
	- `buffer_editor`
	- `hooks.command_not_found`
	- `datetime_format` (partial solution)
- Fix validation of `table.padding` input so value is not set (and
underflows `usize` causing `table` to run forever with negative values)
- New proper types for settings. Fully validated enums instead of
strings:
  - `config.edit_mode` -> `EditMode` 
  	- Don't fall back to vi-mode on invalid string
  - `config.table.mode` -> `TableMode`
- there is still a fall back to `rounded` if given an invalid
`TableMode` as argument to the `nu` binary
  - `config.completions.algorithm` -> `CompletionAlgorithm`
  - `config.error_style` -> `ErrorStyle`
    - don't implicitly fall back to `fancy` when given an invalid value.
- This should also shrink the size of `Config` as instead of 4x24 bytes
those fields now need only 4x1 bytes in `Config`
- Completely removed macros relying on the scope of `Value::into_config`
so we can break it up into smaller parts in the future.
- Factored everything into smaller files with the types and helpers for
particular topics.
- `NuCursorShape` now explicitly expresses the `Inherit` setting.
conversion to option only happens at the interface to `reedline`

Use Vec for Closure captures (#10940)
# Description
Changes the `captures` field in `Closure` from a `HashMap` to a `Vec`
and makes `Stack::captures_to_stack` take an owned `Vec` instead of a
borrowed `HashMap`.

This eliminates the conversion to a `Vec` inside `captures_to_stack` and
makes it possible to avoid clones altogether when using an owned
`Closure` (which is the case for most commands). Additionally, using a
`Vec` reduces the size of `Value` by 8 bytes (down to 72).

Disallow duplicated columns in table literals (#10875)
# Description
Pretty much all operations/commands in Nushell assume that the column
names/keys in a record and thus also in a table (which consists of a
list of records) are unique.
Access through a string-like cell path should refer to a single column
or key/value pair and our output through `table` will only show the last
mention of a repeated column name.

```nu
[[a a]; [1 2]]
╭─#─┬─a─╮
│ 0 │ 2 │
╰───┴───╯
```

While the record parsing already either errors with the
`ShellError::ColumnDefinedTwice` or silently overwrites the first
occurence with the second occurence, the table literal syntax `[[header
columns]; [val1 val2]]` currently still allowed the creation of tables
(and internally records with more than one entry with the same name.

This is not only confusing, but also breaks some assumptions around how
we can efficiently perform operations or in the past lead to outright
bugs (e.g. #8431 fixed by #8446).

This PR proposes to make this an error.
After this change another hole which allowed the construction of records
with non-unique column names will be plugged.

Add Record::remove/retain/retain_mut (#10876)
# Description
While we have now a few ways to add items or iterate over the
collection, we don't have a way to cleanly remove items from `Record`.

This PR fixes that:

- Add `Record.remove()` to remove by key
- makes the assumption that keys are unique, so can not be used
universally, yet (see #10875 for an important example)
- Add naive `Record.retain()` for inplace removal
- This follows the two separate `retain`/`retain_mut` in the Rust std
library types, compared to the value-mutating `retain` in `indexmap`
- Add `Record.retain_mut()` for one-pass pruning

Add common map-like API to nu_protocol::Record (#10841)
# Description

> Our `Record` looks like a map, quacks like a map, so let's treat it
with the API for a map

Implement common methods found on e.g. `std::collections::HashMap` or
the insertion-ordered [indexmap](https://docs.rs/indexmap).

This allows contributors to not have to worry about how to get to the
relevant items and not mess up the assumptions of a Nushell record.

## Record assumptions
- `cols` and `vals` are of equal length
- for all practical purposes, keys/columns should be unique

## End goal

The end goal of the upcoming series of PR's is to allow us to make
`cols` and `vals` private.
Then it would be possible to exchange the backing datastructure to best
fit the expected workload.
This could be statically (by finding the best balance) or dynamically by
using an `enum` of potential representations.

- Add validating explicit part constructor
`Record::from_raw_cols_vals()`
- Add `Record.columns()` iterator
- Add `Record.values()` iterator
- Add consuming `Record.into_values()` iterator
- Add `Record.contains()` helper

Convert more examples and tests to record! macro (#10840)

Use `record!` macro instead of defining two separate `vec!` for `cols`
and `vals` when appropriate.
This visually aligns the key with the value.
Further more you don't have to deal with the construction of `Record {
cols, vals }` so we can hide the implementation details in the future.

Allow filesystem commands to access files with glob metachars in name (#10694)

# Description
Changes processing of arguments to filesystem commands that are source
paths or globs.
Applies to `cp, cp-old, mv, rm, du` but not `ls` (because it uses a
different globbing interface) or `glob` (because it uses a different
globbing library).

The core of the change is to lookup the argument first as a file and
only glob if it is not. That way,
a path containing glob metacharacters can be referenced without glob
quoting, though it will have to be single quoted to avoid nushell
parsing.

Before: A file path that looks like a glob is not matched by the glob
specified as a (source) argument and takes some thinking about to
access. You might say the glob pattern shadows a file with the same
spelling.

(though Windows does not allow file name to contain `*`.).

So, with this fix, a file shadows a glob pattern with the same spelling.
If you have such a file and really want to use the glob pattern, you
will have to glob quote some of the characters in the pattern. I think
that's less confusing to the user: if ls shows a file with a weird name,
s/he'll still be able to copy, rename or delete it.

Could break some existing scripts. If user happened to have a file with
a globbish name but was using a glob pattern with the same spelling, the
new version will process the file and not expand the glob.

Remove cd w/ abbreviations (#10588)
# Description

This removes the old style "cd with abbreviations" that would attempt to
guess what directory you wanted to `cd` to. This would sometimes have
false positives, so we left it off by default in the config.

In the current main, we have much-improved path completions
(https://github.com/nushell/nushell/pull/10543) so you can now do `cd
a/b<tab>` and get a much better experience (because you can see the
directory you're about to cd to). This removes the need for the previous
abbreviation system.

This does remove the old abbreviation system. It will likely mean that
old config files that have settings for abbreviations will now get
errors.

`$env.config.buffer_editor`/`$env.EDITOR`/`$env.VISUAL`

Both the external buffer editor of reedline (by default bound to
`Ctrl-o`) and the commands `config nu` and `config env` will respect
those variables in the following order:
1. `$env.config.buffer_editor`
2. `$env.EDITOR`
3. `$env.VISUAL`

Example:

Add kitty protocol config to nushell (#10540)
# Description

Support keyboard enhancement protocol as implemented by Kitty console,
hence Kitty protocol.

This PR enables Nushell to use keybinding that is not available before,
such as Ctrl+i (that alias to Tab) or Ctrl+e (that alias to Esc, likely
I mistaken). After this PR merged and you set `use_kitty_protocol`
enabled, if your console app support Kitty protocol (WezTerm, Kitty,
etc.) you will be able to set more fine-grained keybinding.

For Colemak users, this feature is a blessing, because some Ctrl+[hjkl]
that previously unmap-able to Ctlr+[hnei] now it is.

# User-Facing Changes

This adds `use_kitty_protocol` config which defaults to false. When set
to `true`, it enables kitty protocol on the line editor when supported,
or else it warns.

about the parser + evaluation, so 🙏

# Description
because we already have `null` as the value of the type `nothing` and as
a followup to the two other attempts of mine, i propose to remove the
redundant `$nothing` built-in variable 😋

this PR is the first step, deprecating `$nothing`.
a followup PR will remove it altogether and wait for 0.87 👍 

⚙️ **details**: a new `NOTHING_VARIABLE_ID = 3` has been added,
parsing `$nothing` will create it, finally a `Value::Nothing` will be
produced and a warning will be reported.

this PR already fixes the `toolkit.nu` module so that it does not throw
a bunch of warnings each time 👌

Update internal use of decimal to float (#10333)
# Description
We made the decision that our floating point type should be referred to
as `float` over `decimal`.
Commands were updated by #9979 and #10320

Now make the internal codebase consistent in referring to this data type
as `float`.

Remove python-like string multiplication (#10293)
# Description
Currently we support "multiplication" of strings, resulting in a terse
way to repeat a particular string.
This can have unintended side effects when dealing with mixed data (e.g.
after parsing data that is not all numbers).
Furthermore as we frequently fall-back to strings while parsing source
code, this introduced a runaway edge case in const evaluation (#10212)

Work for #10233

## Details
- Remove python-like string multiplication.
- Workaround for indentation
  - This should probably be addressed with a purpose built command
- Remove special const-eval error test

`"string" * 42` will stop working. (This was used for example in the
stdlib)

Remove pythonic int * list behavior (#10292)
# Description
The pythonism that multiplying a scalar integer with a list results in a
repeated concatenation of the list, is ambiguous with other possible
interpretations and thus actively harmful to clear semantics in nushell.

Another possible reading of this scalar/vector product would be trying
to perform elementwise multiplication with the scalar.

Before we bless this alternative as a more reasonable design the best
course of action is to remove this pythonism.

Make cursor_shape optional (#10289)
# Description
There are several cursor shape related issues #7151 #9243 #7271 #8452
#10169, you can't disable the cursor shape feature even if you comment
out the entire `cursor_shape` block in the config.nu, and even worse,
when nushell exits with an error, the cursor shape can't be restored,
that is annoying.

This PR provides an opportunity to disable setting the cursor shape.

If you use the default config.nu, nothing changes, but if you comment
out `cursor_shape` block or set them to `inherit`, related cursor shape
will not be set.

update format date when using %x %X %r (#10272)
# Description

Apparently some strftime formats are already localized and when you
"double localize" them, they don't work. This PR fixes that so that %x
%X %r %c don't go through the localization step.

Example: %x %X
### Before
```nushell
❯ date now | format date "%x %X %p"
09/08/2023 08 AM

### After
```nushell
❯ date now | format date "%x %X %p"
09/08/23 08:09:14 AM
```

I started to make one format_datetime to rule them all but one returns a
string and one returns a value. If we convert to the string, we lose the
nice error messages. If we change to value, more code has to be changed
elsewhere. So, I decided to just leave two functions.

rename the types with spaces in them to use - (#9929)

before this PR,

```
which feels inconsistent with the `cell-path` type annotation, like in
```nushell

this PR changes the name of the "cell path" type from `cell path` to
`cell-path`

plugins are registered and it also should work with `nu -n --no-stdlib`.

Move Value to helpers, separate span call (#10121)
# Description

As part of the refactor to split spans off of Value, this moves to using
helper functions to create values, and using `.span()` instead of
matching span out of Value directly.

Screen reader-friendly errors (#10122)
- Hopefully closes #10120  

# Description

This PR adds a new config item, `error_style`. It will render errors in
a screen reader friendly mode when set to `"simple"`. This is done using
`miette`'s own `NarratableReportHandler`, which seamlessly replaces the
default one when needed.

Before:

## Things to be determined

- ~Review naming. `errors.style` is not _that_ consistent with the rest
of the code. Menus use a `style` record, but table rendering mode is set
via `mode`.~ As it's a single config, we're using `error_style` for now.
- Should this kind of setting be toggable with one single parameter?
`accessibility.no_decorations` or similar, which would adjust the style
of both errors and tables accordingly.

No changes by default, errors will be rendered differently if
`error_style` is set to `simple`.

Spanned Value step 1: span all value cases (#10042)
# Description

This doesn't really do much that the user could see, but it helps get us
ready to do the steps of the refactor to split the span off of Value, so
that values can be spanless. This allows us to have top-level values
that can hold both a Value and a Span, without requiring that all values
have them.

We expect to see significant memory reduction by removing so many
unnecessary spans from values. For example, a table of 100,000 rows and
5 columns would have a savings of ~8megs in just spans that are almost
always duplicated.

Create Record type (#10103)
# Description
This PR creates a new `Record` type to reduce duplicate code and
possibly bugs as well. (This is an edited version of #9648.)
- `Record` implements `FromIterator` and `IntoIterator` and so can be
iterated over or collected into. For example, this helps with
conversions to and from (hash)maps. (Also, no more
`cols.iter().zip(vals)`!)
- `Record` has a `push(col, val)` function to help insure that the
number of columns is equal to the number of values. I caught a few
potential bugs thanks to this (e.g. in the `ls` command).
- Finally, this PR also adds a `record!` macro that helps simplify
record creation. It is used like so:
   ```rust
   record! {
       "key1" => some_value,
       "key2" => Value::string("text", span),
       "key3" => Value::int(optional_int.unwrap_or(0), span),

modules and allowed to export them, but only within one level. This PR:
* allows recursive exporting of constants from all submodules
* fixes submodule imports in a list import pattern
* makes sure exported constants are actual constants

Should unblock https://github.com/nushell/nushell/pull/9678

### Limitation 1:

Considering the above `spam` module, attempting to get `eggs bacon` from
`spam` module doesn't work directly:
```nushell
use spam [ eggs bacon ]  # attempts to load `eggs`, then `bacon`
use spam [ "eggs bacon" ]  # obviously wrong name for a constant, but doesn't work also for commands
```

Workaround (for example):
```nushell
use spam eggs
use eggs [ bacon ]

print $bacon.viking  # prints 'eats'
```

I'm thinking I'll just leave it in, as you can easily work around this.
It is also a limitation of the import pattern in general, not just
constants.

### Limitation 2:

`overlay use` successfully imports the constants, but `overlay hide`
does not hide them, even though it seems to hide normal variables
successfully. This needs more investigation.

Rename misused "deprecation" to removal (#10000)

In the past we named the process of completely removing a command and
providing a basic error message pointing to the new alternative
"deprecation".

But this doesn't match the expectation of most users that have seen

Rename main to script name when running scripts (#9948)

This PR does three related changes:

* Keeps the originally declared name in help outputs.
* Updates the name of the commands called `main` in the user script to
the name of the script.
* Fixes the source of signature information in multiple places. This
allows scripts to have more complete help output.

Combined, the above allow the user to see the script name in the help
output of scripts, like so:

NOTE: You still declare and call the definition `main`, so from inside

This PR should close #8036, #9028 (in the negative) and #9118.

Fix for #9118 is a bit pedantic.  As reported, the issue is:
```

arithmetic".

# Description
* [x] Abide by constraint that Value::Duration remains a number of
nanoseconds with no additional fields.
* [x] `to_string()` only displays weeks .. nanoseconds. Duration doesn't
have base date to compute months or years from.
* [x] `duration | into record` likewise only has fields for weeks ..
nanoseconds.
* [x] `string | into duration` now accepts compound form of duration
to_string() (e.g '2day 3hr`, not just '2day')
* [x] `duration | into string` now works (and produces the same
representation as to_string(), which may be compound).

## duration -> string -> duration
Now you can "round trip" an arbitrary duration value: convert it to a
string that may include multiple time units (a "compound" value), then
convert that string back into a duration. This required changes to
`string | into duration` and the addition of `duration | into string'.
```
> 2day + 3hr
2day 3hr # the "to_string()" representation (in this case, a compound value)
> 2day + 3hr | into string
2day 3hr # string value
> 2day + 3hr | into string | into duration
2day 3hr # round-trip duration -> string -> duration
```
Note that `to nuon` and `from nuon` already round-tripped durations, but
use a different string representation.

## potentially breaking changes
* string rendering of a duration no longer has 'yr' or 'month' phrases.
* record from `duration | into record` no longer has 'year' or 'month'
fields.
The excess duration is all lumped into the `week` field, which is the
largest time unit you can
convert to without knowing the datetime from which the duration was
calculated.

Scripts that depended on month or year time units on output will need to
be changed.

Auto-expand table based on terminal width (#9934)
# Description

This PR adds back the functionality to auto-expand tables based on the
terminal width, using the logic that if the terminal is over 100 columns
to expand.

This sets the default config value in both the Rust and the default
nushell config.

To do so, it also adds back the ability for hooks to be strings of code
and not just code blocks.

Fixed a couple tests: two which assumed that the builtin display hook
didn't use a table -e, and one that assumed a hook couldn't be a string.

Nothing return type (#9935)
# Description
Fix #9928. When parsing input/output types `nothing` was incorrectly
coerced to `any`. This is addressed by changing how
[to_type](0ad1ad4277/crates/nu-protocol/src/syntax_shape.rs (L121))
method handles `nothing` syntax shape. Also `range` syntax shape is
addressed the same way.

`nothing` and `range` are correctly displayed in help and strictly
processed by type checking. This will break definitions that were not in
fact output nothing or range and incorrect uses of functions which input

I've actually encountered them yesterday too (seems like they have
appeared after some refactoring in the middle) but was not able to fix
that rapid.

Created a bunch of tests.

This is just draft since we're seeing some issues with the latest fixes
to table drawing that just landed with #9796. We're hoping to get these
fixed, but if we're not able to fix them before the next release, we'll

## About the change
1. To make module support const, we need to change `parse_module_block`
to support `const` keyword.
2. To suport export `const`, we need to make module tracking variables,
so we add `variables` attribute to `Module`
3. During eval, the const variable may not exists in `stack`, because we
don't eval `const` when we define a module, so we need to find variables
which are already registered in `engine_state`

## One more thing to note about the const value.
Consider the following code
```
module foo { const b = 3; export def bar [] { $b } }
use foo bar
const b = 4;
bar
```
The result will be 3 (which is defined in module) rather than 4. I think
it's expected behavior.

It's something like [dynamic
binding](https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/elisp/Dynamic-Binding-Tips.html)
vs [lexical
binding](https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/elisp/Lexical-Binding.html)
in lisp like language, and lexical binding should be right behavior
which generates more predicable result, and it doesn't introduce really
subtle bugs in nushell code.

What if user want dynamic-binding?(For example: the example code returns
`4`)
There is no way to do this, user should consider passing the value as
argument to custom command rather than const.

Replace &Span with Span since Span is Copy (#9770)
# Description
`Span` is `Copy`, so we probably should not be passing references of
`Span` around. This PR replaces all instances of `&Span` with `Span`,
copying spans where necessary.

Remove Signature.vectorizes_over_list entirely (#9777)
# Description
With the current typechecking logic this property has no effect.
It was only used in the example testing, and provided some indication of
this vectorizing property.
With #9742 all commands that previously declared it have explicit list
signatures. If we want to get it back in the future we can reconstruct
it from the signature.

Simplifies the example testing a bit.

Causes a breaking change for plugins that previously declared it. While
this causes a compile fail, this was already broken by our more
stringent type checking.
This will be a good reminder for plugin authors to update their
signature as well to reflect the more stringent type checking.

Add functions for each Value case (#9736)

This PR ensures functions exist to extract and create each and every
`Value` case. It also renames `Value::boolean` to `Value::bool` to match
`Value::test_bool`, `Value::as_bool`, and `Value::Bool`. Similarly,
`Value::as_integer` was renamed to `Value::as_int` to be consistent with
`Value::int`, `Value::test_int`, and `Value::Int`. These two renames can
be undone if necessary.

Clean up tests containing unnecessary cwd: tokens (#9692)

The working directory doesn't have to be set for those tests (or would
be the default anyways). When appropriate also remove calls to the
`pipeline()` function. In most places kept the diff minimal and only
removed the superfluous part to not pollute the blame view. With simpler
tests also simplified things to make them more readable overall (this
included removal of the raw string literal).

Remove broken compile-time overload system (#9677)
# Description

This PR removes the compile-time overload system. Unfortunately, this
system never worked correctly because in a gradual type system where
types can be `Any`, you don't have enough information to correctly
resolve function calls with overloads. These resolutions must be done at
runtime, if they're supported.

That said, there's a bit of work that needs to go into resolving
input/output types (here overloads do not execute separate commands, but
the same command and each overload explains how each output type
corresponds to input types).

This PR also removes the type scope, which would give incorrect answers
in cases where multiple subexpressions were used in a pipeline.

Finishes removing compile-time overloads. These were only used in a few
places in the code base, but it's possible it may impact user code. I'll
mark this as breaking change so we can review.

Exclude deprecated commands from completions (#9612)
# Description
We previously simply searched all commands in the working set. As our
deprecated/removed subcommands are documented by stub commands that
don't do anything apart from providing a message, they were still
included.
With this change we check the `Signature.category` to not be
`Category::Deprecated`.

## Note on performance
Making this change will exercise `Command.signature()` more
frequently! As the rust-implemented commands include their builders here
this probably will cause a number of extra allocations. There is
actually no valid reason why the commands should construct a new
`Signature` for each call to `Command.signature()`.
This will introduce some overhead to generate the completions for
commands.

remove let-env, focus on mutating $env (#9574)
# Description

For years, Nushell has used `let-env` to set a single environment
variable. As our work on scoping continued, we refined what it meant for
a variable to be in scope using `let` but never updated how `let-env`
would work. Instead, `let-env` confusingly created mutations to the
command's copy of `$env`.

So, to help fix the mental model and point people to the right way of
thinking about what changing the environment means, this PR removes
`let-env` to encourage people to think of it as updating the command's
environment variable via mutation.

Before:

```
let-env FOO = "BAR"
```

Now:

```
$env.FOO = "BAR"
```

It's also a good reminder that the environment owned by the command is
in the `$env` variable rather than global like it is in other shells.

Improve type hovers (#9515)
# Description

This PR does a few things to help improve type hovers and, in the
process, fixes a few outstanding issues in the type system. Here's a
list of the changes:

* `for` now will try to infer the type of the iteration variable based
on the expression it's given. This fixes things like `for x in [1, 2, 3]
{ }` where `x` now properly gets the int type.
* Removed old input/output type fields from the signature, focuses on
the vec of signatures. Updated a bunch of dataframe commands that hadn't
moved over. This helps tie things together a bit better
* Fixed inference of types from subexpressions to use the last
expression in the block
* Fixed handling of explicit types in `let` and `mut` calls, so we now
respect that as the authoritative type

I also tried to add `def` input/output type inference, but unfortunately
we only know the predecl types universally, which means we won't have
enough information to properly know what the types of the custom
commands are.

Hovers should be more accurate in some cases that previously resorted to

`chrono::Datetime::to_rfc2822()` panics when it would format a negative
year. 3339 does not. This makes negative-year datetimes inconsistent
compared to positive ones, but it's better than a panic.

Skip strum in regular nu-protocol build (#9445)
# Description
`derive(EnumIter)` is only required to run completeness tests.
Thus make the derive conditional on test and move `strum` and
`strum_macros` to the dev dependencies.

## Is it worth it?

Removing this derive does not change the binary size (checked via `cargo
bloat --crates` from `cargo-bloat`).
Compile time change is below a second so hard to judge based on a single
run of `cargo clean --profile dev; cargo build --timings`
Unsure if this negatively impacts how incremental compilation can
recompile when you switch between `cargo build`/`run` and `cargo test`
in your local workflow.

To get rid of `strum`/`strum_macros` as a proc macro crate we would need
to also remove it from `reedline`.
Further more a crate in the `polars` dependency tree uses `strum`
(curently not as relevant for the 1.0 build).

Creates a config point for specifying long / short date time formats.
Defaults to humanized as we have today.

Provides for adding strftime formats into config.nu such as:

clean up config by removing legacy options (#9496)
# Description

This PR cleans up the deprecated legacy config options that were
deprecated in nushell version 0.72.0. These are the config points that
were in the root of the config but also duplicated in the nested
structures. For instance `use_ls_colors` was in the root of the config
and also in the `ls.use_ls_colors` nested structure. This was originally
done to preserve backwards compatibility when nested structures were
introduced in the config file.

Here's a list of the legacy config points that were removed.

- `use_ls_colors` - previously replaced with `ls.use_ls_colors`
- `rm_always_trash` - previously replaced with `rm.always_trash`
- `history_file_format` - previously replaced with `history.file_format`
- `sync_history_on_enter` - previously replaced with
`history.sync_on_enter`
- `max_history_size` - previously replaced with `history.max_size`
- `quick_completions` - previously replaced with `completions.quick`
- `partial_completions` - previously replaced with `completions.partial`
- `max_external_completion_results` - previously replaced with
`completions.external.max_results`
- `completion_algorithm` - previously replaced with
`completions.algorithm`
- `case_sensitive_completions` - previously replaced with
`completions.case_sensitive`
- `enable_external_completion` - previously replaced with
`completions.external.enable`
- `external_completer` - previously replaced with
`completions.external.completer`
- `table_mode` - previously replaced with `table.mode`
- `table_index_mode` - previously replaced with `table.index_mode`
- `table_trim` - previously replaced with `table.trim`
- `show_clickable_links_in_ls` - previously replaced with
`ls.clickable_links`
- `cd_with_abbreviations` - previously replaced with `cd.abbreviations`
- `filesize_metric` - previously replaced with `filesize.metric`
- `filesize_format` - previously replaced with `filesize.format`
- `cursor_shape_vi_insert` - previously replaced with
`cursor_shape.vi_insert`
- `cursor_shape_vi_normal` - previously replaced with
`cursor_shape.vi_normal`
- `cursor_shape_emacs` - previously replaced with `cursor_shape.emacs`

Removes log_level from the config since it doesn't do anything any
longer. We moved log-level to a nushell parameter some time ago.

Renames history_isolation to isolation in the config.nu for consistency.

Fixes a couple bugs where values weren't being set in the "//
Reconstruct" sections (history_isolation, table_show_empty).

Reorganized/Moved things around a tiny bit and added a few comments.

history.histor_isolation is now history.isolation.
If anyone is still using the legacy config points, deprecated since
0.72.0 2022-11-29, their config will break.

Revert #8395 "Treat empty pipelines as pass-through" (#9472)
In my view we should revert nushell/nushell#8395 for now

## Potentially inconsistent application of semantic change
#8395 (1d5e7b441b) was loosening the type
coercion rules significantly, to let missing data / void returns that
were either expressed by `PipelineData::Empty` or the `Value::nothing`
be accept by specifically those commands/operations that made use of
`PipelineData::into_iter_strict()`. This could apply the new rules
inconsistently.

## Turning explicit failures into silent continuations
Furthermore the effect of this breaking change to the missing data
semantics could make previous errors into silent failures.
This could either just reduce the effectiveness of teaching error
messages in interactive use:

### Contrived example before

Error: nu:🐚:only_supports_this_input_type

In rare cases people could already try to rely on catching an error of a
downstream command to actually deal with the missing data, so it would
be a breaking change for their existing code.

## Problem with `PipelineData::into_iter_strict()`

Maybe this makes `_strict` a bit of a misnomer for this particular
iterator construction.
Further we did not actively test the `PipelineData::empty` branch before

Treat empty pipelines as pass-through (#8395)

This allows empty pipelines to pass their emptiness through a filter.
This helps fix issues like trying to run a filter on an `ls` in an empty
directory. It also feels a bit more reasonable that a filter filters
what is *there* but doesn't require something to be there.

revert: move to ahash (#9464)
This PR reverts https://github.com/nushell/nushell/pull/9391

We try not to revert PRs like this, though after discussion with the
Nushell team, we decided to revert this one.

The main reason is that Nushell, as a codebase, isn't ready for these
kinds of optimisations. It's in the part of the development cycle where
our main focus should be on improving the algorithms inside of Nushell
itself. Once we have matured our algorithms, then we can look for
opportunities to switch out technologies we're using for alternate
forms.

Much of Nushell still has lots of opportunities for tuning the codebase,
paying down technical debt, and making the codebase generally cleaner
and more robust. This should be the focus. Performance improvements
should flow out of that work.

Said another, optimisation that isn't part of tuning the codebase is
premature at this stage. We need to focus on doing the hard work of
making the engine, parser, etc better.
